Święcenia kapłańskie przyjął 30-04-1972 r., w 1982 r. uzyskał stopień doktora teologii w zakresie historii Kościoła na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim; 05-12-1992 mianowany biskupem pomocniczym diecezji opolskiej, a święcenia biskupie otrzymał 06-01-1993 w bazylice watykańskiej; w 1998 r. uzyskał habilitację na Wydziale Teologicznym KUL; w 2008 r. uzyskał tytuł naukowy profesora zwyczajnego; 29-12-2011 r. mianowany Biskupem Gliwickim, uroczysty ingres do katedry odbył się 28-01-2012 r.
