About the Exhibition
The “Golgotha of the East” exhibition was created through the joint efforts of the Depot History Centre, the Wrocław Branch of the Association of Sybiraks, the Association of Memory of Siberian Deportees, and the Redemptorist Monastery at the Parish of Our Lady Mother of Consolation. It is located in Wrocław at 10 Wittig Street, in the former memorial room dedicated to the deportations to Siberia and the Katyn Massacre.
With a deep concern for the cultural heritage of the Sybiraks, the Depot History Centre took steps in 2018 to secure the valuable collections related to the Siberian deportees and prepare a new exhibition at the former memorial site. Thanks to funding from the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the project “Wrocław and Falstad Will Not Forget!” was successfully completed. As a result, the new narrative exhibition “Golgotha of the East” was established in the place of the former Sybiraks Memorial Room.
The “Golgotha of the East” exhibition covers more than 260 m² and is divided into two sections. The first introduces the theme of repressions related to the deportations to Siberia, spanning from the 17th to the 19th century. The second section focuses on the deportations during World War II, starting with the first mass deportation on 10 February 1940. The exhibition also explores other crucial aspects of the martyrdom of Poles in the East, such as the Katyn Massacre. However, the exhibition is not solely focused on suffering; it also highlights the resilience, ingenuity, and determination of Poles in surviving and escaping this inhospitable land.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive educational programme aimed at primary and secondary school students. Professional guides and educators have developed numerous narrative paths tailored for both children and adults. Various teaching aids have been prepared, including special seating cushions for listening sessions, educational cards, city game cards, and exercise books. A catalogue of the exhibition was also created and distributed to visitors on special occasions.
An engaging location-based game has been developed as part of the exhibition, requiring skill, knowledge, and cleverness. It is designed for various age groups, with different levels of difficulty and types of tasks, making it suitable for school children (aged 7 and above) as well as adults.
